Real Madrid Reach Champions League Final

Soccer NewsReal Madrid took one step closer to their 10th Champions League Trophy with their 4-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Germany on Tuesday. With the win of 5-0 on aggregate, Real has reached the finals of the Champions League to face the winners of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.

Those two teams face off on Wednesday for their second leg at Chelsea in North London after playing to a 0-0 draw last week in Madrid in the first leg.

This is the first time Real Madrid has reached the final of the Champions League in 12 years. They have a chance on May 24 in Lisbon, Portugal to re-instate their status as the foremost club on the continent.

Tuesday’s match was a rout. Bayern were destroyed by the execution of Real. The Blancos scored two goals four minutes apart in minute 16 and 20, on headers from defender Sergio Ramos. The first was on a corner kick while the second came from a free kick.

In minute 36, Real Madrid made the score 3-0 when Cristiano Ronaldo beat the Bayern keeper.

Bayern became yet another champion to suffer the dreaded winner’s curse. No defending champion of the Champions League has retained the Cup in 24 years since AC Milan did so when they won the 1989 and 1990 Cup. However, at that time the tournament was known as the European Cup and not the Champions League Cup.

Real, with counter attack after counter attack, from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were just too much for Bayern to handle. The final goal was scored on a free kick Ronaldo by hitting the ball under the wall as the Bayern players leaped to block the shot in the air that never came their way.

The only negative to the match was Real will not have Xabi Alonso their best midfielder for the final after he picked up his second yellow card and will be suspended on May 24 in Lisbon.
